Why do I need to carry out a skin allergy test 48 hours BEFORE every colour application?

The skin allergy test is the most reliable way of predicting a possible allergic reaction. If you experience itching, redness, swelling or any reaction in or around the test area DO NOT APPLY THE PRODUCT. If you do experience a reaction please contact our experts, retaining the packaging for reference and/or consult your doctor.

Are hair colourants safe?

Hair colourants have been extensively studied and their safety has been repeatedly confirmed by independent scientists and regulatory authorities alike. Consumers can use hair colourants with confidence when all instructions are followed correctly.

Are hair colourant allergies common?

Allergies can occur with a vast number of substances, including foods and natural ingredients

Allergic reactions to hair colourants are extremely rare. Reactions can occur for a very small number of people and especially if they have previously had a black henna tattoo.

Potential reactions can be detected by carrying out the skin allergy test, as directed, 48 hours before you wish to use the product. The Skin Allergy Test must be completed before each colour application.

Why do black henna tattoos increase the risk of an allergic reaction?

Black henna tattoos are not always safe because they may contain very high concentrations of an ingredient called PPD which is strictly forbidden for such usage on the skin.

PPD is used, and approved for use, at a much lower concentration in hair colourants everywhere in the European Union and is also widely used internationally.

Are allergic reactions preventable and if so how can they be avoided?

Allergic reactions to hair colourants can be avoided. Potential reactions can be detected by carrying out the skin allergy test 48 hours before you wish to use the product. The test is proven to be 100% predictive (Krasteva et al., European Journal of Dermatology, 2002 & 2005).

Is PPD safe to use in hair colourants?

PPD is commonly used in permanent oxidation hair colourants and is used by many manufacturers worldwide. PPD is approved by the European authorities for use in hair colourants everywhere in the European Union and is also widely used internationally.

Is there a link between hair colourants and cancer?

Extensive research over a number of years by both the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the John Hopkins University concluded there was no proven relationship between hair colourants and cancer. Another comprehensive review of scientific studies on hair colourants, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found no increased risk of cancer from the use of hair colourants. Hair colourants are one of the most thoroughly studied consumer products on the market today and their safety is supported by a wealth of scientific research. The European cosmetics industry takes its responsibility to consumers seriously and, together with the European Commission and EU member states, continues to confirm the safety of hair colourants on the EU market.

I am pregnant. Is it safe to use hair colourants?

Hair colourants are some of the most thoroughly studied consumer products on the market.

During pregnancy the body enters a phase of change and some people find themselves more sensitive to certain ingredients. Therefore it is important to follow the instructions and carry out a skin allergy test 48 hours prior to every colour application.

If you are in any doubt regarding your personal sensitivity we recommend that you consult a doctor before doing the skin allergy test.

How long must I leave between each colour application?

We advise that you leave 4 to 5 weeks between each application, in order for you to maintain the condition of your hair. A skin allergy test must be carried out 48 hours prior to each colour application.

I'm unhappy with the colour I've just applied, can I apply another colourant immediately?

No.

There are a number of reasons why the colour result may not be as you expected. The condition of your hair, the method that was used and also previous colour applications can all have an influence on your colour result. There may be an alternative solution to quickly correct the colour.

How long should I leave between colouring and perming and vice versa?

We advise that you leave 2 weeks either way between these treatments.

After using a pre-lightener how long must I wait before applying a colourant?

We suggest that you wait at least 5-6 hours between pre-lightening and colouring your hair. However, we recommend you consult the instruction leaflet that accompanies your hair colourant as the timing may differ from colourant to colourant. It is also recommended that you let your hair dry naturally after pre-lightening. Once you have applied the colourant you may blow-dry your hair.

Can I use a colourant over highlighted hair?

We suggest that home colourants are not used over previously highlighted hair. The colour result may be patchy. On this occasion it is better to seek advice from a professional salon. However, we recommend you always read the information printed on the colourant pack as a small number of colourants can be used over previously highlighted hair.

Can I use a colourant over bleached hair?

Yes. You can use a colourant over bleached hair; however you must read the instructions for use, carefully and follow the advice.

Can I use a colourant over henna?

No. We do not advise this. On this occasion it is better to seek advice from a professional salon.

I've just finished colouring my hair and my skin is stained, how can I remove it?

Use a gentle shampoo to wash the colour from the skin.

A good tip for the future is to apply a thin layer of Vaseline around the hair line, before colouring the hair to avoid staining.

Can I use a colourant on relaxed hair?

No. We do not advise this and depending on the colourant being applied, you should wait at least 2 weeks after relaxing the hair. In this case, it is better to seek advice from a professional salon.

I use gel, waxes or hairspray, is it OK to colour my hair?

If any of these products are in your hair, we suggest that the hair is washed the day before the colourant is applied, because the barrier created by these products may not give the desired colour result.

My hair absorbs colours very quickly; can I leave it on for less time?

No. This would cause your colour to fade due to the product not fully processing, or the colour result may not develop into the desired result. Please Contact the Experts who maybe able to offer a solution.

Can I use colour on relaxed hair?

As relaxed hair is chemically treated, we advise on this occasion that a permanent colourant should only be applied within a professional salon.

I use gel, waxes or hairspray, is it OK to colour my hair?

If these products have caused a build up, due to being frequently used between washes, we suggest that the hair be washed the day before colouring your hair.

If I have long hair, will one box of colourant provide sufficient coverage?

No, if your hair is shoulder length or longer you should use two boxes of colourant.
